Patter Theme 2, the second EP by the titular Chicago indie rockers Patter, wastes very little time at just fourteen minutes. While much of the trio’s guitar textures, rhythmic shifts, and understated vocals are reminiscent of 90s post-rock acts like Tortoise or June of 44, the project’s pace is anything but.
As we’ve said, Patter represents a "brilliant hodgepodge of indie rock, mathy pop, and slacker charm,“ which makes sense, given that they’re made up of members of three equally inventive Chi-Town outfits, Options, The Deals, and The Knees. We get a truly dazzling lil’ sampler platter across this spitfire of an EP.
No one loves a bloated rock star “supergroup” but everyone loves a DIY community “supergroup” or if you prefer, a new band featuring familiar faces, each of whom make great music. Patter falls into that latter category, a trio comprised of Seth Engel (Options), Wilson Brehmer (The Knees, Jodi) and Joe Suihkonen (The Deals, Gentle Heat).
