There’s a specific type of love required to be a part of a DIY community, it requires a dedication to expressiveness, camaraderie, and a belief that together we can all make some sort of artistic difference in the world. Lerryn spent many years fostering that sense of of community in South East London, having run her very own creative space (Lerryn’s Cafe) and as the vocalist and guitarist of ramshackle London punk band Dead Arm. In the years since however, Lerryn has discovered the next level of love and dedication, becoming a mother and starting a family. As A Mother, Lerryn’s solo debut (out September 13th via Redundant Span Records), captures the magnetism to be there for those you care about, attempting to nurture and provide unequivocal love, to watch your baby grow and blossom. while balancing your personal needs.
The thing is though, you don’t need to be a mother, or even a parent, to understand the love that glows from Lerryn’s songs. They speak to the core of anyone who has ever felt immense compassion, to anyone whose world has been upended from lightness, to anyone that’s felt hope in their hearts. Having shared the stunning title-track (which featured Naima Bock on backing vocals), Lerryn returns with the beauty of “You Are My Love,” a folk-indebted art pop song played with the grace of her full band. Bouncing with a minimalist beat and a brilliantly melodic progression of guitars and keys, the song feels as soothing as a lullaby’s gentle nature while immersing itself in the profundity of love, reaching to new heights while remaining grounded by Lerryn’s calm vocal presence.
Speaking about the song, Lerryn shared:
"A song about a holiday in France. I took the melody to the studio and told the band to imagine the sun was shining and that they had just lit a cigarette and were sat on some hot concrete. This is the first song written as a band for this EP. Every time I sing it I think about how starting a family expands your capacity for love, and what a courageous act that can be."
