ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Mabe Fratti - "Sentir que no sabes"
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Parsnip - "Behold"
Pop music that’s unafraid to be messy, frayed around the edges, and even a tinge dissonant scratches a very particular kind of itch. On Behold, Melbourne’s Parsnip fits this bill quite satisfyingly, never relying on the gritty texture of lo-fi production or the posturing of a scuzzy garage revival band.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Fake Fruit - "Mucho Mistrust"
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Pom Poko - "Champion"
Champion is a record you'll want to listen to over and over. It’s packed with infectious sing-songy vocals, jagged instrumentals, and warm vibes. Ragnhild Fangel Jamtveit has described it as the album where Pom Poko has matured. New life experiences, such as parenthood, shape Champion into the magical experience that it is.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Lilacs & Champagne - "Fantasy World"
The music in question is, well, difficult to describe in typical genre buzzwords, though many have tried. Neither “psychedelic” nor “trip-hop” do much of any justice to the twosome’s defiant sound. Then again, “sound collage” doesn’t help much either because even that movement tends to focus more on the process than the end-product.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: J.R.C.G. - "Grim Iconic...(Sadistic Mantra)"
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Robber Robber - "Wild Guess"
Robber Robber have truly found their footing in pulsating shards of post-punk noise with an impressive grasp of melody and intoxicating loose grooves. The group manage to stay grounded with a furious punk foundation while mixing in unique song structures and the knack for combining sharp tones and playful exchanges.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Rong - "Live At New Alliance"
Existing decidedly on the fringes, Rong’s explosive sound splices and dices together bits and pieces of noise rock, art punk, post-hardcore, and experimental metal to form something delightfully alien. The abrasion is tantamount, an oozing eruption of caterwauling guitars, jaw dropping rhythms, and vocals yelped with fury and resolve.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Lily Seabird - "Alas,"
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Caroline Davis & Wendy Eisenberg - "Accept When"
Unknowing has never sounded as free as it does on Accept When, the new record from Caroline Davis and Wendy Eisenberg. The duo confidently dis- and reassemble the paths of their music without worrying about the destination. They rely on each other and all they bring to the table, rather than individual experience.
