Kian Sorouri has played in a lot of great bands, contributing as a member and collaborator through the years to Loose Tooth, Golden Apples, The Superweaks, and Cave People. With Goshupon, the Philadelphia based musician is moving into a lead role, bringing to live his own songs, recorded piecemeal with friends at home and in studios around town. The process was low key, designed as an opportunity for Sorouri to collaborate together on music friends with friends, void of longterm commitment. It’s a revolving door, with Sorouri the one constant. Set to release the project’s full length debut, Volume 1 on April 11th, recorded by Philadelphia DIY legend Dan Angel, the record is gooey with alternative fuzz hits. Easily digestible but still recorded with plenty of character, the album is a throwback to the “buzz bin” hits and hooks of the slacker pop 90s.
Having already shared lead single “Theme From The Drain,” Goshupon returns with another preview in the form of “D Boy,” a slow dripped that splits the difference between twang and silky refrains. The song is gentle but nuanced, a modern interpretation of Sebadoh, The Lemonheads, and the FM gold that sprinkled the airwaves of our collective youth. It’s focused songwriting, allowing the progression to dig and grow even as Sorouri keeps a mellow head.
