New York duo Jeanines made a big impression with their self-titled 2019 debut album, a brilliant indie-pop album that constantly stunned with minor melodic shifts and tightly composed jangle. Much like Alvvays and generations of fuzzy pop bands before them, the song’s are instantly memorable, leaving an impression with from the saccharine verses to the earworm hooks. The band are set to release their sophomore album, Don’t Wait For A Sign, on April 22nd via Slumberland Records (Artsick, Chime School, The Umbrellas), a record that takes the formula of their already great debut and improves it in every way. The production is more radiant, the arrangements are top-notch, and the vocals are full of warmth. Alicia Jeanine and Jed Smith lean into the sunshine amid the chaos, even as the tone turns a bit darker, the pop shimmer is undeniably bright.
The band announced their new record with lead single “Any Day Now,” a breezy song about waiting for the right time. The album’s second single and title-track, “Don’t Wait For A Sign,” may just be the opposite message of “Any Day Now,” a song about making the most of things, forgetting your worries, and living your best life. Smith’s sharp drumming is loaded with fills while the entire song jangles with staccato rhythms. Alicia Jeanine’s vocals are an easy comfort, reminding us to “wash away those worry lines, you still have a lot of time” and suggesting we all get out into the open air. There’s a 60’s folk present in the vocal melody paired together with a tightened twee rumble, the two fitting perfectly together.
The band will celebrate their album release on April 9th at Brooklyn’s TV Eye with support from Forever Honey, The Lil’ Hospital, and The Natvral.
