In the two years since Austin’s Spray Paint released their last album Into The Country, the band members have stayed busy releasing others projects that include the great Spiritual Mafia and During. You can now add Rider/Horse to the list, the latest effort from Spray Paint’s Cory Plump together with Chris Turco (Les Savy Fav, Trans Am). The duo, based out of Kingston, NY, are set to release their debut album, Select Trials, on October 8th via Ever/Never Records (Obnox, Maximum Ernst, Richard Papiercuts), recorded during the pandemic in a temporarily shuttered music venue owned by Plump.
“Chime Inn” is our first taste of the pair’s collaboration, pulling together massive tension in a minimalist framework. It’s dark and haunting, scraping against the shadows for the first half of the song. Settling on an aura that seems content to lurk, the song eventually bursts open with programmed drums and electronic whirring, bringing a touch of industrial haze into the otherwise hypnotic post-punk. The video, directed by Thom V. Snively III, is surreal and hallucinogenic, with floating pills, a disoriented Tin Man, creepy fish, and a generally deranged visual tone.
