We’re excited to premiere the debut single and accompanying video for “Judgement Day” from the Jersey City-based project CR and the Nones. The project is the latest from songwriter Chris Gennone, who previously fronted CR and the Degenerates, and sees him expanding the unique hybrid of folk, country, punk, and heartland rock that he developed during his time with the Degenerates.
“Judgement Day” has a dense sound that’s reminiscent of The War On Drugs with layers of guitars, sweeping synths, and calming vocals that shoot up an octave or two for emphasis at just the right moments. Lyrically, the song documents the challenges in overcoming periods of adversity in life, as Gennone confronts some hardships, but remains steadfast in acknowledging their fleeting nature. He begins the song with an apology, “I’m sorry I lost my mind,” but maintains a degree of optimism by promising that he’ll power forward through the tough times. Throughout the song, he injects some nice sonic elements to buttress his words, including an outro of majestic organ sounding synths.
The accompanying video follows Gennone through different parts of his native New Jersey that reflect his personal journey. He’s reflective through early scenes - looking pensive while playing his guitar on the side of the road, driving, and stopping for food before he reaches his final destination in Jersey City. There, he’s warmly greeted by a group of friends for a party. It ends on a jovial note, as once the fun celebration ends, Gennone passes out in his bed from exhaustion.
“Judgement Day” will appear on the band’s debut album, Living In Fear, which is scheduled for release in November.
