If anyone was worried that DIY punk is fading away in this pop-centric climate we find ourselves in, fear not. There’s still lots of scrappy bands around the country making punk music with their own flavor, bands such as terrifically snotty twee punk quartet First Responders. Combining garage and riot grrrl inspired femme punk, the Kalamazoo based band could have fit right in at K Records or Kill Rock Stars in the early 90’s, but they’re here now and there ain’t a damn thing stopping them from doing what they want to do. The band released their debut album You Rang? way back in September 2018, a record that may not take itself too seriously, but still has plenty to say. It’s a ripper that gets better with every listen, unhinged and relatable.
First Responders are breathing new life into the release (but hey, if you haven’t heard it, it’s still new to you) with a video for single “Send Noods.” Directed, edited, and produced by the band’s drummer, Ina Foster-Goodrich, the video captures the songs tongue-in-cheek pasta theme (you know… “noods”) and runs wild with it as pasta is thrown from into mouths, out of mouths, onto faces, into bathtubs, and beyond. The band take give a perfect “fuck you” attitude as to the idea of social network stalkers asking for “noods,” as the song then slips into an homage to noodles of all variety. The song is simplistic but overflowing with gang vocals, endless energy, and all the snide pasta related fun you can ever hope to have.
