Word on the street is that Chicago's Coaster "take it to the limit... and beyond" and the band's upcoming Deuces EP certainly makes a strong argument for that claim. Following last year's full length debut, Slow Jams, the idiosyncratic quartet will release their latest bent pop 7" EP on November 11th via Community Records and Sooper Records. Their latest effort pushes their sound as they embrace inevitable change, both in their music as well as their band. Deuces marks the end of an era, the last record to feature the band's original rhythm section, Michael Byrnes (bass) and Tom Graham (drums), captured following their final tour together with Coaster's remaining members, Matt Kissinger (vocals/guitar) and Seth Engel (guitar/vocals). With transition ever present throughout, Deuces is (positively) reluctant to stay in one place, spastically revolving between indie pop, slacker punk, math rock, emo, and moments of reckless glam. It's big ol' infectious rock and roll that's too busy having a good time to concern itself with petty limitations.
We're excited to premiere the EP's first single, "Cool," a song about the balance of creating something that is both catchy and artistically innovative... a concern Coaster shouldn't worry about. "Cool" walks that line with grace, offering memorable hooks at every turn while tweaking standard structures and delving into their own brightly lit progressive art-pop sound. It's radio friendly. It's complex. It's the best of both worlds. The song convulses through twisted refrains, pilling hooks against each other, with Kissinger's dynamic vocal melodies leaping between howling yelps, crooning falsetto, and soulful yearning without warning. It's truly something special to hear a vocalist delivering without restraint and the tangled music follows suit. There's a great deal to unfold on "Cool" but as they say, "I'm cool with it if you're cool with it".
