After three years of singles and EPs, Deady are set to release their first full length, HUNKA JUNK, digitally this Friday via Romanus Records (Pat & The Pissers, Lung, Turbo Fruits). The Louisville based quintet’s album was worth the wait, a record that really shows a wide dynamic range, peeling between layers of anthemic punk anthems, frayed post-hardcore, and combustible noise pop. While Mandy Keathley’s lyrics are often aimed at our crumbling world, the political themes are juxtaposed by the fact that the band are clearly having fun in spite of it all. The sentiments are important but so is the release of the tension that ensues.
“Systematic Slaughter” is the album’s opening track, is a call to action, a rallying cry for protest and the fight again inequality. The knotted riffs twist and combust with the rhythmic stampede, the band steadily pushing forward as if passing through solid concrete. There’s a thudding heaviness to it all, but Deady put the emphasis on melodies over anything too crushing, opting for bright hooks and somewhat of a skate punk charm to assist in getting their message out.
Speaking about the song, Keathley shared:
“‘Systematic Slaughter’ is the acknowledgement of the methodical means in which our class struggles are built into the government machine of oppression. The current administration has provided a relentless assault on our human rights and a roll back of freedoms, all while dismantling the foundational pillars of democracy. Left to wallow in despair and hopeless awareness, we have no choice but to transmute our energy into protest; to vehemently oppose the government, to consciously exercise compassion, and to loudly defend our communities in an attempt to affect change on a local level. ‘Systematic Slaughter’ is about just that - the dismemberment of our opportunities, and our subsequent rally for action and protection.”
