As we all head into the weekend, we’re happy to share a few of our favorite new releases, out this week (in splendid alphabetical order). The write-ups are all kept brief and bite sized, snippets to catch your interest. There’s a lot of great music out every week and these are just some of the many we think you should check out.

Blowing in like the rotten winds of hell, comes First Metastasis, the debut EP from Prague's Cancer Void. With a blend of old school death metal, doom, cosmic dread, and a bit of thrash, the record feels like a cohesive introduction, a swarming and seasick spew of terror. Shifting time and space, the band present a debut that is ruthless, morbid, and structurally unpredictable.

Scapulimancy is phenomenally ugly, a record steeped in crust and a caustic layer of filth. Which is to say it's everything we hoped Hedonist's debut would be. The Canadian death metal band are locked into annihilation, augmenting their asphyxiating attack with gargantuan thrash metal tendencies. This one is special, repulsion perfected over sour fucking riffs, dizzying rhythms, and bone shattering density. Good grief, skulls are going to shatter.

Illiterates, the self proclaimed "dumbest band in hardcore" are back with Does Not Compute, a brute punk album designed for thick skulls (and those that love sardonic caveman punk). The band remain every bit as agitated on their third album, but they're pushing their sound in new directions, experimenting with shifting tempos and expanding influences. In the end though, Illiterates are still a knuckles to the ground hardcore band, their tongue-in-cheek scorn as biting as it is self aware.

Seven years after Jessica Risker began releasing albums under her own name (previously recording as Deadbeat), the Chicago singer/songwriter returns with the stunning Calendar Year. Written in 2020, the psychedelic folk album captures “a year in the life,” reflecting on the dour times with beauty amid the difficulty. Risker and her band expand their atmospheric qualities, dropping further into cosmic acoustics and Broadcast influenced textural warmth.

Mal Devisa's music has always been built around impeccable depth and heartfelt soul, her songs personal and passionate. Palimpsesa, a new archival record that collects a decade of releases, is a testament to freedom, moving without pre-defined shape as Deja Carr's poetic writing moves between jazz and astounding folk beauty to bombastic hip-hop and punk with a graceful ease. To call it impressive doesn't really scratch the surface, but Palimpsesa is a great introduction to the project's dynamic roots.

While there's nothing quite like seeing Rosali play together with David Nance & Mowed Sound, there's a special intimacy in watching her perform solo, shining a different light on her songs. Captured back in April, Slow Pain: Live and Solo from Drop of Sun leaves you hanging on every one of Rosali Middleman's words, the sole focus trending toward her voice and the gorgeous sentiment of her introspective lyrics.
