Deady - "Bad As It Sounds" | Post-Trash Premiere

by Dan Goldin (@paintingwithdan)

When we last heard from Louisville’s Deady back in March the band had just released their new single “Hot Damn” together with a video of exceptionally high production value. I remain amazed that there was one of those net cannons (which I don’t think I’ve ever seen outside of a cartoon), but what’s important is that the quintet were gearing up for the release of their full length debut, 2 Dead 2 Furious. Spring turns to Summer and Summer turns to Fall, but the record is still on its way (due out in September), the band are on tour now, and there’s “Bad As It Sounds,” a brand new single from the upcoming album.

Over the course of the past two years, Deady have proven themselves to be wildly adaptable, their music an ever shifting hybrid of post-punk, hardcore, nu-metal, and noise rock with just a hint of damaged pop melodies to hold it all together. It’s an aggressive sound, but it’s more fun than it is menacing, heavy and destructive but built on hooks and a bombastic sense of joy. “Bad As It Sounds” captures all that to a tee, a propulsive song that relies on its spitfire energy and an onslaught of tangled riffs. It’s a palpable frenzy of a single, winding between thick progressions and knotted rhythms that veer from anthemic to dizzying and back again under the howl of Mandy Keathley’s vocals. Ranging from a harsh howl to a warped and gluey melodic surge, she leads the way into from one boisterous movement to the next.
