As we all head into the weekend, we’re happy to share a few of our favorite new releases, out this week (in splendid alphabetical order). The write-ups are all kept brief and bite sized, snippets to catch your interest. There’s a lot of great music out every week and these are just some of the many we think you should check out.

Richmond's Black Button make great cerebral hardcore that's both reckless and existentialist. They shred with the grit of early SST releases, carving a path away from modern hardcore's glossy side and into a raw and art damaged dexterous collision of brainy pummeling and bruising density. Internal Life is intelligent hardcore, rabid and untethered.

Broadcast wrap up their essential archival series of releases with Distant Call - Collected Demos 2000 - 2006, presenting early versions of the songs we all know and love. It’s a beautiful reflection of a band gone too soon, a look back at the immediacy of Trish Keenan’s songs even in their sparse homespun design. The pieces were always in place, regardless how the shapes changed.

Dom Sensitive, the new solo project from Dom Trimboli (Wireheads, Dom & the Wizards), is woozy mutant post-punk with dusty hip-hop beats and slurred poetic inclinations. Leather Trim is a delightfully strange mix of unflinching psych and manipulated rhythmic samples, everything glued together into a refreshing ooze of surrealist grooves.

Fatboi Sharif and Fat Tony are an unconventional duo on paper but their collaborative album, Brain Candy, brings out the best in both of them. Produced in full by Steel Tipped Dove, the record does a great job of finding an equilibrium between avant-garde hip-hop and head splitting bars over hard knocking beats. The pairs styles bounce off each other, embracing the weird while reminding us their darts remain forever sharp.

Montreal’s Feeling Figures write really great songs, the kind that implant themselves in your mind. The magic of their music resides in how they get there, their swerving path to pop nuggets surging with raw art pop, fuzzy lo-fi punk, hazy basement psych, and a noisy jangle. Everything Around You is adventurous, pushing their dynamics further, stretching out at the edges of the band’s art punk oeuvre, embracing both the heavier and more gentle ends of the spectrum.

Merce Lemon’s new album, Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild, is a profound and heartfelt record that seems to revolve around the ideas of nature and community. Balancing soft sentiment with muscular songwriting, Lemon is able to weave between delicate country and fuzzy indie rock in a way that feels natural to her writing, her words held close on slow burning folk rippers.
Sub Pop

Naima Bock might have the most beautiful voice in the world. She's also an incredible songwriter, increasingly evident on her second album, Below A Massive Dark Land, a record built on gorgeous folk music, delicate arrangements, and a gentle brilliance. There's warmth radiating from Bock's songs, nuanced yet focused, sweeping compositions that support her ever stunning vocals.

Excreting new levels of nasty brutality, San Jose’s Ripped To Shreds return with Sanshi, a crusty death metal album that bulldozes sensibilities. Andrew Lee’s skull crushing riffs and the band’s vicious duel guitar solos hurtle with the intensity of a brick to the face, winding and thrashing as they storm through tempo shifts, out the mud and into the grinding madness.

Comprised of three great songwriters (Joe Kenkel, Trevor Nikrant, and Lou Turner), Nashville's Styrofoam Winos bring a collective experience to their DIY informed alt-country twang. Real Time, the band's second album, is bursting with great songs, channeling their individual personalities into a cohesive and delightful whole. Front porch Americana at its best.

Tropical Fuck Storm's sound is warped and blistering, a unique and caterwauling fusion of experimental indie rock, damaged folk, noise rock, and psychedelic punk, delivered with pop hooks and a deranged technicolor radiance. Inflatable Graveyard is their first proper live album, captured in 2022 at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall. Swarming in a wall of guitar noise and buzzing synths, the band tear through their set with a primal intelligence, maximalist and unapologetic. Subtlety be damned.

September 23rd is the first release from the legendary experimental musician William Basinski's Arcadia Archive series, a gorgeous recording of minimalist piano and resonant loops. Recorded in 1982 (with the piano composition dating back to the 70s) at his Arcadia Loft, there's a rich atmosphere and hazy depth that crackles in the open night air.
