Leafing plays like lawless explorers on their new single “Take The Medicine.” The Oakland/NYC band’s latest digs deeply into the depth of their musical prowess to offer up a mad track that mixes a sundry of guitar and jazz-rock sources without ever missing their mark. The quartet, comprising Miles Toth (bass, vocals), Sebastian Green (drums), Adam Turay (guitar), and Dominic Green (guitar, vocals), has been slowly chipping away at new material over the past few years. “Take The Medicine” precedes the band’s upcoming album, Folding Then to Now, out September 13th via Sad Cactus Records.
“Take The Medicine” follows the album’s first single, “Sleep,” which hypnotically cruises into a dreamland of jazz and math-rock. This new track takes sharper corners, spins out with more smoke, and won’t wait for you to get onboard. It shifts gears faster than a Formula One car, with no clear indication of where it’s headed next.
Mathy, new wavy, post-punky, whatever you want to call it, “Take The Medicine” blends the force of the militaristic marching rhythm with the grace of the layered backing Beach Boys-style vocals. Featuring a wonderfully long sonic dismantling–where the band dissolves into freeform abstraction just to reform under a new song and pace–Leafing proves that there is no end to the roadmap they are on.
