Sometimes it’s the songs with the least intentionality that have the biggest impact. Let loose and see what happens. That would appear to be the case with “Nail Biter,” the latest single from North Carolina’s Cor De Lux. Originally recorded during the band’s sessions for last year’s Media LP, the band scrapped the b-side without much intention on releasing it. With a string of shows and tour dates coming up over the next couple months however, the band decided to dig the song out and throw it into upcoming set lists, reconnecting with the track that they say is inspiring the sound of their next album.
“Nail Biter” is noticeably looser than much of the steely disposition found on Media. It’s the sound of the Kill Devil Hills based quartet having fun, trying out new things just to see how it lands. The rhythmic introduction sound like chimes falling off a counter, the guitars are played exclusively in harmonics, and there’s a real elastic feel to Dawn Moraga’s vocal approach. It’s all animated with a carefree kind of churn and it works wonders. Go see them play it live, we’re willing to bet it’ll be among the evening’s highlights.
