"Party Punks" Sculpture Club recently signed with Born Losers Records, and they're kicking it off with a new era, transitioning from the aura of The Smiths into the fleeting emotions of The Cure. The 80's Romcom-esque single "Cursed or Hexed" is paired with a single shot music video featuring an abundance of glitter and poppy 80's synth. "Cursed or Hexed" is delivered in sounds of upbeat drums and wavy guitars as passionate vocals deliver words of feeling as if one is being pulled in a million directions from their own inner conflicts before regaining control of thoughts.
Sculpture Club’s Chaz Costello shared:
"When I first wrote these songs I was in a place with music where I was overthinking everything and shooting myself in the foot. It was mid pandemic and all I had was time to analyze everything I had ever done or said or created. So to counteract I tried to turn my brain off or set simple parameters for the music and just try to tap into the feeling. What the songs actually felt like and following that rather than pushing them into what they “should” feel like.
The lyrics came from a joke I was making about myself and all my “impeccable” music tastes and past lives I’ve had. But in doing that I realized how fickle your personality can be at any given moment & how that might be perceived. If that was acceptable, or how much of personality / identity you can “let'' bleed into each other. That thought process can really send you into a bad spiral if you let it. You start losing yourself in trying to identify yourself. You really start to feel like you’re Cursed. But ultimately you have to accept it and enjoy it. There’s nothing else you can do. A concept I'm still getting used to."
The beats of "Cursed or Hexed" withholds an exciting climactic feeling, whether you're in a good or bad headspace. The single encompasses the continuous growth of Sculpture Club's evolving style and radiates the influence to stay motivated. They are totally worth the time to feel something, be one of the first to stream.
