Toronto-based trio Life In Vacuum have been kicking out wonderfully noisy math-infused post-hardcore since they formed in 2006, two years after brothers Ross Chornyy (drums) and Sasha Chornyy (vocals/guitar) immigrated from Ukraine to Canada with their parents. The band is rounded out by bassist Geoff Albrecht, who stepped into the role just before the trio set to work on their excellent 2018 album All You Can Quit which saw them solidify their energetically chaotic sound. Now, Life In Vacuum are getting ready to kick all of that up a notch on their upcoming album Lost which will be out on April 14 via Born Losers Records. Both of the singles released so far from the album showcase a different side of the band and third single “Moving On” is no different.
“Moving On” sees the band explore their more melodic side as they take a look into the process of moving on and moving forward. The song features math rock-esque guitar work that is reminiscent of a spider spinning its web, soaring vocals that make use of echoing effects, soft but driving bass, and powerful drums. All of this combined with the mid-tempo pace of the song creates an almost dream-like, ethereal quality that sends you inward and makes you think. Before the song fades out, the band sends you down a rabbit hole of layered, melodic, textured sound that perfectly encapsulates the disorienting and difficult but ultimately freeing feeling of letting go and moving on. The song is also accompanied by an imagery-laden video created by The Bunn (multidisciplinary artist Scott Sokoloski), complete with suits, plants, and texting.
Speaking about the song, lead vocalist and guitarist Sasha Chornyy said, “Musically ‘Moving On’ was born way back in 2017 in a slightly different form. Lyrically the title says it all plus it was largely inspired by Viagra Boys and Amy Taylor of Amyl and The Sniffers’ cover of John Prine’s ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’.”
