Philadelphia DIY linchpin Heather Jones is sharing a new live solo set tomorrow, and we’re thrilled to have first dibs. I’m Not Good at Making Plans was recorded at Johnny Brenda’s and features a collaborative improvised tape performance between Jones and bedroom pop artist Pinkie Normal. While that tape runs, Heather Jones plays an amorphous mix of sludge and drone cuts that adhere to strong pop undertones. It’s a beautiful amalgamation, a layering that only buttresses the respective strengths of both the live and tape recordings.
By my count, I’m Not Good at Making Plans features exclusively unreleased material filed between Ther and Pinkie Normal’s improvised tape. Highlight moments come on the back half of the performance, most notably the somber and melancholic “Furnace Head” and the heftily auto-tuned synth closer “Star Wars.” With plenty of compression and distortion applied post performance, Jones turns this solo set into something massive, engulfing.
