In addition to a recent flurry of exciting Sediment Club activity, Austin Sley Julian has remained busy over the past eight years with his electronic no-wave solo project, Sunk Heaven. Following the well received THE FVCKHEAѪTED LVNG back in the summer of 2021, Julian released Dreamt Hubris, a new EP earlier this year, that made a sinister mix of electronic and analog industrial. Wasting little time, Sunk Heaven returns with the next full length, Off-White Colosseum, due out October 24th via Hot Releases (SHV, Wilted Woman, Karl Raymar). Recorded during a residency at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works, it’s a record that feels both mechanical and immediate, where things are rarely as they seem, and the claustrophobic nature of the recordings is matched with equal parts wonder.
“One Billion Tender” sounds like its come grinding out a dystopian future, the bass and makeshift scrap metal drums wrapped in static, like a nightmare only partially realized. Sunk Heaven are able to bounce between dread and dysfunction throughout the song, pounding away at reverberating hits of steel with distorted realities, chirping and glitching in a cavernous state of the unknown. Shrouded in a stark and shadowy environment, Austin Sley Julian’s vocals do their best to give the effort a human touch, but this one is a transmission from another realm.
