Last year saw the release of Two, the appropriately titled second album from art rock extraordinaires Spirits Having Fun. The band, split between Chicago and New York, joined together with the great Born Yesterday Records (Lawn, Caution, Mesh) to bring their dazzling record to life, an album that’s intricate and consistently exciting as the band slink between disorienting grooves and tangled guitars. The melodies are oft wonky and bent around traditional pop structures into new shapes reflective of the expansion and collapse of their progressions, but the end result remains both catchy and complex. The time has come for the band to bring Two on the road, and their tour, together with the amazing Floatie, begins this Friday, June 17th (complete dates below). A dream pairing of two bands we’re beyond eager to see live, Spirits Having Fun are celebrating the momentous tour with a new video for Two album opener, “Silhouette”.
Directed, shot, & edited by Ben Still, the video pairs well with the surrealist nature of the music. The clip captures the band’s own Katie McShane (vocals/guitar) as she’s split between rooms, connecting by telephone wire and thread, as walls seemingly dissolve and reappear, creating a feeling of both visual emptiness and the beauty of nature. It’s fun and open to a lot of interpretation, much like the song with its stunning rhythm and dexterous groove. The songs twists and turns, pops and sizzles, keeping afloat as the walls close in and the ground crumbles. One listen and you may find yourself saying, “damn, I really need to see this live,” and thankfully, now is your time.
