New Brunswick’s Motherhood are back. The Canadian outfit’s just-announced Winded follows up 2019’s Post Trash-approved Dear Bongo. Today, we’re excited to premiere the video for “Ripped Sheet,” the upcoming record’s most clear cut punk number that follows lyricist Brydon Crain’s progression toward sobriety, happiness and “dry land.”
Amery Sandford’s aquatic animation follows Motherhood on a wet, seafaring tour route, capturing the jittery, brisk riffs on “Ripped Sheet.” At surface level, Motherhood venue-cruise with water-skiing roadies in tow before plummeting underwater to thrash for seafloor fauna. The psychedelics kick in by close and the trio launch from trench to crest with feedback wailing to a fade.
The avant-rock three-piece work an off-kilter cross of punk, folk and rock into Winded by way of lively pop overtones. Motherhood dial in on Adam Sipkema’s mutating, unconventional rhythms and full, engrossing harmonies between Brydon Crain and bassist Penelope Stevens. With the mixing help of Greg Saunier, the band’s refined stop-go approach allows space on the new Motherhood record, helping craft a musical narrative on songs like “Ripped Sheet.” The track’s three-part structure of preliminary fuzz, uptempo punk, and a plummeting quarter-time conclusion maps Crain’s shaky pursuit to take back control.
