Thousandaire - "Coward" | Post-Trash Premiere

by Dan Goldin (@post_trash_)

Atlanta’s Thousandaire make music with a panoramic expanse, creating post-hardcore best captured in wide screen. Their sound is colossal, layered with massive riffs and dense distortion, recalling the glory days of post-hardcore, from Hum and Silkworm to Seam and Pinebender. There’s an emotional core to their songs, but that heart on a sleeve mentality is buried beneath impenetrable walls of muscular sludge and shoegaze sheen. For every bit of brute force though, there’s still a feeling of subtly in their songs, as melodies are tucked vibrantly between the cracks. Set to release their sophomore album, Ideal Conditions, on December 16th via Knife Hits Collective (Nerver, Multicult, Cherubs), the band are headed out on tour together with Philadelphia’s Rid of Me (dates below).

“Coward” is the record’s second single, a song blistering with noise but overcome with melody, heavy and beautiful, slow and fully permeated with guitars. Much like Hum’s return on Inlet, Thousandaire is swinging for the fences when it comes to the weight of their riffs, the song feels like a ton of bricks floating up into the atmosphere, though we recommend shelter upon the inevitable return. It’s essentially a sound about growing older and no longer partaking in some of youth’s joys, a reminiscent aura that’s been beaten to an emotional pulp.

Speaking about the song, Thousandaire’s Andrew Wiggins shared:

“Insofar as our songs are about anything, this one’s about two people who used to get fucked up together, one got out and the other doesn’t understand. And so now they’re a coward. A lot of our songs - nearly all of them, now that I think about it - are about this sort of thing.”
