After a rapid turnaround between their debut and sophomore LP, Brooklyn’s High Pony return three years later with their latest album, All We Did Was Dream. Due out September 17th via Super Wimpy Punch Records (Swollen, Grocer, The Chives), the band have paired down to a power trio, with songwriter Seth Goldman handling both guitars and bass, in addition to the vocals. Recorded with Adam Reich (Titus Andronicus, Baked, The So So Glos) - who added some keys, percussion, and additional guitars - and Nick Dooley (Washer, Stove), they bring out the best in the twin guitars of Goldman and Jay Fox, their distorted fuzz riffs occupying a perfect sonic space and saturated density.
All We Did Was Dream is a testament to the idea that sometimes things don’t happen as fast as you’d like, but patience is a virtue. “Drinkin’ Through Your Heaven” is the album’s lead single, a song that wriggles it’s way forward, with feedback and scratchy harmonies bouncing between speakers. There’s a wild effect to it, one that feels like it’s often rattling around inside your head, which works with the band’s rust peeling pop-punk and indie influences, sounding something like early Modest Mouse meets late era Modest Mouse. The layering is pretty wild as shoegazy thickness and dampened twang often sits just above a mountainous solo. Pull back the layers and it’s the heart of High Pony at its core.
