New Haven, CT label owners, venue-runners, and scrap rockers Spit-take are back with a great new song “Chickenly,” the first off of their upcoming new tape World of Us. A sub-two minute romp of shoreline scrap-and-roll, “Chickenly” is Spit-take’s alive and quaking tale of breaking out. A delightful bit of songwriting, “Chickenly” is given from the perspective of the titular creature (“I crossed the street/ chickenly”) but with just enough nuance that it can be also understood from the perspective of someone who is, say, maybe, stuck at a shit job, or feeling generally unsure of being out in the world. The propulsive rhythm section keeps everything running forwards, and wonderfully feedback-y guitar accents the motion giving a constant sense of progress. Nothing ever drags, and this delightful track is indicative of the record as a whole. “Chickenly” sees Spit-take do what they consistently do best: write catchy, quick songs that have a refreshingly minimal amount of fuss.
World of Us is out Friday, May 28th via NG2BC.
