The visionaries over at Born Yesterday Records have been seemingly plucking great new bands out of thin air, having released great debuts from Stuck, Moontype, and Caution over the past year. Obviously these bands didn’t actually come out of nowhere and they’ve all worked hard to get where they are, but they’ve all been brought together under the great ears at Born Yesterday. Now the label introduces the world to Mesh, an awesome new post-punk band from Philadelphia. Having released a three song demo back in 2019, the band’s official self-titled debut EP is due out May 21st. The record is tightly wound, with hard and jittery rhythmic coils and guitars that peel away at the foundation.
They make post-punk in the vein of Wire and Swell Maps, but where most of the “revival” bands go for a steely disposition, Mesh seem to prefer their attack to be rattled, fuzzy, and delightfully melodic. “Company Jeep” is the record’s first single, a song that rips with a permeating guitar line bleeding all over the song. The presence of the guitar’s radiant distortion is felt like a chemtrail weaved between the motorik rhythm, ripping through space and time (kinda literally). The song’s lyrics are basically a warning about the ol’ 9-5 day job and losing your mind as a result, “feeling like you’re better off dead.” To anyone stuck in a job where they’re overworked and underpaid… you know exactly what they are talking about. The video has some great clips of workplace destruction and fun video effects that only add to the single’s enjoyment.
