In case their band name didn’t tip you off, one could describe Birthday Ass as a “colorful band” at every step of the way. From their lyrics to their compositions and every abrasion that comes as a result, the Brooklyn based band create a fun and freaky mix of jazz, prog, punk, and pop, skewering everything into it’s own chaotic charm. The band are set to release their sophomore album, Head of the Household, on April 23rd via Ramp Local (Godcaster, JOBS, Black Nash), a wild ride that finds its own personal freedom, jaggedly bouncing in every direction with bent pop melodies and hard turns at the every corner. There’s an absurdist quality to it all and a sense of psychosis that’s kept in the pocked by tight musicianship.
After sharing “Blah” and “Sunlit Toes,” we’ve got the premiere of the band’s latest single, “Plubbage Blubbage.” While the lyrical depths of this one remain mysterious, the sax skronk on other hand, is rather immediate, bleeding over the impeccably nimble bass. This one has a big groove that fights with the scrawling noise, but the band twist and turn, never staying in the same place for too long, with a big reverberating drum bridge, wildly yelped (and potentially scatted) lyrics, and a surrealism that never flinches.
Speaking about the song, Priya Carlberg (vocals/composer) shared “The meaning of the word plubbage is top secret so I can’t go there. This was the first song we had rehearsed for the album and I feel it encapsulates us well, a twist of big-band meets Phil Collins.”
