Northampton’s Nanny formed back in 2017 and quickly released their debut EP, Nowhere. The set was built on an enthusiastic power-pop sound (there really isn’t any other way to do power-pop efficiently). It’s been over three years but the quartet - Hannah Mills (vocals, guitar), Adam Reid (lead guitar), Mareika de Haas (bass, vocals) and Liam Cregan (drums) are set to release their full length debut, Can’t Remember, Can’t Forget. Due out March 5th via Midnight Werewolf Records (Sorespot, Fred Cracklin, Greed Island), the album surges with that same power-pop bliss, but everything has been dialed up a notch, the hooks are hookier, the riffs rip just a bit harder.
Lead single “Elka Park” is a song the band says is “about burnout, the desire to escape, and the toll of all that we are unable to leave behind.” Built on some great and shimmering melodies, the band create an ever so sweet pop dirge as they cross back and forth between wanting to get away and the realization that you can’t ever get away from yourself. It’s a weighty topic but balanced with a delightfully light delivery and nice distorted guitar crunch. There’s something really anthemic about the way they open the chorus with “I’m checking out,” that sticks like glue.
