London’s Qlowski released their full length debut, Quale Futuro?, back in June via Feel It Records and Maple Death Records, an album that really cemented their futuristic take on romanticized post-punk and experimental new wave. The record is undeniable mix of disoriented sheen and punk attitude, with a nod to the 80’s and a reckless desire to envelop the listener with noise when least expected. The highlight of the record came courtesy of “A Woman,” a song that found keyboardist Cecilia Corapi handling lead vocals. It’s a mesmerizing moment on an otherwise jarring effort, thick with synth atmospheres and a tight (but expansive) krautrock rhythm courtesy of Christian Billard.
The band return this week with A Woman And Beyond, a remix EP comprised of the aforementioned single reinterpreted by a diverse set of bands and artists including Girl Ray, Turnip King, and more. Out December 2nd via Feel It / Maple Death, each remix offers a distinctly different take on the song from minimalist to beyond maximalist. In line with their recent output, Girl Ray’s remix draws the bouncing bass line in a disco-tinged direction, with the vocals suspended mid air amid a minimal dance beat. Hotel Lux go for a further detached approach, reconfiguring the song in manipulated pieces, pulling out all the song’s elements only to bring them momentarily screeching back in like sonic darts. Italia 90 however take an opposite approach, going for maximalism, chopping up Billard’s drums for more of a breakbeat jungle infused sound. The Turnip King remix may be the real highlight though, with a hyper-pop attack that comes hurling at warp speed, hitting something like the old cassette guy whose getting blown away by his stereo. With a set of unique remixes, its fun to see Qlowski’s single stretched to the point of obliteration.
