While A.D. Flowers formed just last year, the duo of Garrett Rojas and James Beveridge (who also plays in Portrayal of Guilt) have been making music together since their middle school days. 2020 saw the release of their 80flowers EP and the band have continued a steady release of singles ever since. Now the band are ready for their self-titled sophomore EP, due out October 15th via Infinite Weed Records (Treadles, Vivian K, Honeygold). The band make pop-infused music in the classic sense of the word, naming The Beatles as a core influence, but their sound skews closer to 90’s alternative rock with maybe a pinch of early punk swagger. It all comes together to create something accessible but interesting, making radio friendly hits that never feel contrived.
“Option 2” is the EP’s lead single, a song that brings their big alternative sheen to the forefront, with lush guitars and wavy melodies that bring to mind the best of The Lemonheads and Scott Weiland (which I mean in the best of ways). It’s a forlorn song but still with plenty of big moments, a song that refuses to be weighed down by the world’s problems. The chord progression is big enough to swallow the song whole, but instead just propels the hook, undulating with the whir of the verses as the band dig their way into an appropriately majestic crescendo that feels like the only true summation of all that came before it.
