Just in time for the spookiest of holidays, Los Angeles’ I’m Into Life Records (which is absolutely not a pro-life thing, but rather a label started by people excited to be alive) is getting ready to release Creepy Covers, a compilation of well… creepy covers. With submissions from Sad13, Helvetia, Kal Marks, 100 Watt Horse, and so many others, the proceeds from the record will be donated to Trans Defense Fund LA, which provides safety kits for trans women across the city as well as general mutual aid. While the entire thing is out on Friday (and you can currently stream the Sad13 and MAH KEE OH tracks), we’re thrilled to share the premiere of MJ Lenderman & Wednesday’s cover of Medicine’s “Time Baby III,” a song taken from the greatest of mid-90s soundtracks, The Crow soundtrack.

MJ Lenderman & Wednesday have been on a tear this year, with a slew of increasingly great releases and this lo-fi Medicine cover is another great addition. Whether they’re actually covering “Time Baby II” (not from The Crow) or “Time Baby III” (a more folk like version of the same song) is irrelevant, because they’ve crushed the rich sonic atmosphere and walls of guitar that made Medicine under-appreciated shoegaze legends. The song can feel a bit haunted if you frame it in the right context, but there’s a heavenly kind of surge in the guitar’s melody, with big harmonic wails and serenely cool vocals from Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman. It’s a great fit for a great band on a great compilation for a great cause.
