MEH, the fantastic lo-fi fuzz pop band comprised of members of Nopes, are getting ready to release their sophomore album, Big Soft. Due out October 2nd via Chicago’s Maximum Pelt (Bottled Up, Cafe Racer, Dehd), it’s another warm and welcoming record of warbling tunes and folk inspired slacker rock, built on the gentle moments but still pushing into the red every now and then. It’s a strong collection of songwriting that captures a wide range of lo-fi tricks and treats, the kind that’s made perfectly for its home in your tape deck.
The record’s lead single is “What’s It To You Anyway?,” but sassy title aside it’s one of the album’s more introspective moments. With a deep twang and sharp guitar progression, this one is pulled from the front porch but bred in the basement. The stoned folk of the melody dissolves into brightly distorted guitars with a simple sense of purpose, delivered loud and from the heart. It’s like the dust rising as the sun is setting, .beginning with “everyone’s asking if I’m doing okay” and answering “what’s it to you anyway?”.
