Caustics have truly stepped outside our reality and into another dimension on their recently released album, Touch, out now via Moone Records and Deathbomb Arc. The quartet of John Dieterich (Deerhoof), Yasi Perera (Breezy Days Band), Josiah Wolf (Why?), and Devin Hoff (Julia Holter) came together to create something unheard, unlearned, and unclassifiable and they succeeded in every aspect. The instrumental* album (there are occasional vocals, but no decipherable words) finds the four musicians experimenting with freeforms ideas, each giving space to the next at times, and clamoring it all together at others. They went in without a roadmap and came out in another galaxy altogether.
“Touch 7, 8, & 9” are the record’s final three tracks, combined together for a video directed by Sandy Ewen. The clip is every bit as unwieldy and psychedelic as the music that it soundtracks, mapping the sound with a transmogrified visual of nature and alien landscapes. The video moves in tempo with the song’s impeccable dynamics, blistering one moment and careening the next, as drums, bass, guitar, and electronics all skitter in time, reverting back in on themselves, and warping to find new shape. It’s pretty damn spectacular.
