Psychic Energy are that new Western MA band you need to know, and some of the band’s members you may already be familiar with. The trio, comprised of Candace (Bunny’s A Swine, Footings), Dana (Ex-Temper), and Josh (The Capitulators) may only be on a first name basis to us, and it’s fitting as their debut EP, Post Nothing, feels welcoming, like an old friend come home after years away. The band worked with a pair of luminaries to record their debut, as Justin Pizzoferrato recorded, engineered, and mixed the album, while none other than Beauty Pill’s Chad Clark handled the mastering. It’s a confident introduction for a band that are new in form, but not lacking experience. All proceeds from this album will be donated to: The Movement for Black Lives and Pioneer Valley Workers Center.
The four songs have a big jangle-pop and indie “college” rock feel, their sound not exactly punchy but nothing you’d describe as gentle either. It’s four fuzzy rock tunes, opening with the poppy and energetic “Sycophantic” and highlighted by “United,” a song that tangles their sweet pop harmonies with enough dissonance and distortion to keep it grounded. The band exude patience on “New War,” a heavy slow burn that builds ringing guitar riffs with a crushing hook, pulling the tension forward as they push beyond.
