This Is Lorelei, the project of the brilliant and prolific Nate Amos (Water From Your Eyes) has at times been hard to keep up with. There was an enormous amount of Bandcamp releases to dig though and it could be daunting to know where to start, especially as the various records often take their own shape, between noise, lo-fi, psych pop, and several other experimental paths less traveled. In an effort to highlight the best of those releases (which have since been removed), This Is Lorelei recently released Shakes & Stays, a reimagined collection featuring some of Amos’ strongest work. All the proceeds from the record are being donated to National Bailout and Decibel Food Bank (Chicago). In addition to that record, Amos is set to release a cover of No Doubt’s 2001 hit “Hella Good,” stemming from a recent song study.

Amos’ version of the song keeps the claustrophobic disco punk sound of the original intact but offers less studio polish and a good deal more new wave tonality. There are moments where it sounds almost as though Joy Division were covering No Doubt, and depending on your imagine, it actually sounds a lot better than you may dream. Things get funky, things get a bit doomy, and there’s a constant groove that never relents.
