The boundlessly creative new Los Angeles-based duo Harry the Nightgown (Spencer Harting and Sami Perez of Cherry Glazerr) produce a catchy and playful slice of avant-rock on latest single “Pill Poppin’ Therapist.” Taken from the group’s upcoming self-titled debut album (also on cassette via Topshelf Records), the track is packed with restless energy that pushes into several different directions at once in just under two minutes. Each mini detour takes on a life of its own, as jagged guitars stumble over stuttering drum beats with Perez’s vocals providing a sweet melodic counterpoint to the joyful chaos.
Recorded live to tape in just one day, the song’s spontaneous energy clearly shines through as a result of the on-the-fly recording method employed by the band, aptly capturing the frequent ups and downs that come with depression and mania. “Pill Poppin’ Therapist” is an excellent peak into the vivid sonic world of Harry the Nightgown.
