Wallplant is a solo project from Chicago’s Donny Walsh, a Chicago musician that has been busy with a wide breath of projects over the years (Stuck, Krozer, Surveillance). While it’s been three years since Wallplant released Understand, this week Walsh returns to the project with a new EP, Nothing For Sure. Due out on June 19th digitally as well as on cassette via Friendly Otter, Walsh describes it as his most cohesive solo release to date, recorded by Alex Watson (who also plays drums) and mastered by Stuck bandmate Greg Obis.
The album opener and first single “Hooper” is inspired by Longmont Potion Castle, who graciously agreed to let Walsh use the intro clip that ushers us all into the world of Wallplant. From their the song warps on a warm psychedelic pulse, one that feels anxious but also fluid, ripping on a motorik rhythm with a frantic energy and upbeat tonality. The song is fuzzy yet clear, the vocals buried ever so slightly to be another texture in the mix, rather than the focal point. It’s a fun dose of acid laced bedroom-pop inflicted post-punk, and a welcome introduction to the deranged pop that Wallplant’s Nothing For Sure offers in spades.
