Back in 2018 we were introduced to Minneapolis punk band Scrunchies who released their fantastic debut album, Stunner. That record was tight and abrasive, filled with energetic dissonance and unapologetic hook filled chaos. The band’s line-up has changed in the two years since, with Laura Larson (also of the excellent Kitten Forever) and Danielle Cusack now joined by Matt Castore (who actually produced Stunner). With Castore at the board again, the trio are set to release their sophomore album, Feral Coast, at some point in the coming future (these being as uncertain times as they come and all).. While we wait, Scrunchies are sharing the record’s first single “No Home Planet” with a video, directed by William Hoben and featuring choreographer Taja Will.

True to everything we’ve heard from the band to date, “No Home Planet” is another ripper. Loaded with hooks at every turn, Scrunchies don’t need to wait for no damn chorus, the band rage (a fun kind of cathartic rage) between blown out fuzz punk and melodic power-pop that swirls together into a harsh and sweet amalgam of shredding to create two minutes damn well spent. While it may often feel like it, Larson reminds us “it’s not the end of the world” before kicking up enough dirt and pointed agitation to blow enough a build up of steam.
