There are a lot of bland new bands out there, but let’s get this straight from the start, Stuck are not one of them. The Chicago based quartet are one of the more exciting new bands to emerge from their city’s brilliant DIY scene, creating post-punk in their own image, with a healthy dose of noise rock thrown in. It’s like a kick in the already jagged teeth, one that squirms one direction and explodes in another. Having released their debut EP and a stand-alone single in 2018 and 2019 respectively, the band are set to share the full length debut, Change Is Bad, on April 3rd via Born Yesterday Records (FCKR JR, Glued, Landowner). The band swerve between slurred aggression, blaring attacks, and tightly coiled post-punk; unhinged one moment and snapping back into place the next.
“Bells” is the record’s lead single and album finale, is a caustic punk song built on a motorik groove and plenty of unnerving tension. Greg Obis (guitar/vocals) breaks through the hypnotic groove with hardened near-spoken vocals (reminiscent of early Protomartyr) as he laments on those that insist “you should do better” primarily “because it’s never enough.” After a rough few years that saw constant upheaval in Obis’ life and the world around him, a few developed neurosis are welcome, and the dissonant push against the locked in rhythm is a wonderful exercise in catharsis. I’ll say it again, Stuck are a special band.
