Catalonia band Mourn have been making a name for themselves within the indie rock scene from quite a young age. The band members were in their teens when they released their self-titled debut album in 2015 on Captured Tracks. Since then, Mourn has continued to expand their post-punk sound with each release and their evolution truly shows on the new album Self Worth

The album opener “This Feeling is Disgusting” is a tongue in cheek track that has singer/guitarist Carla Perez Vas saying the title track over and over before loud guitars interject. “Call You Back” is a post-punk track that is reminiscent of the mid-2000s post-punk revival scene with its intricate blend of guitar riffs. The harmonious vocals of Carla and Jazz Rodriguez Bueno both serve to drive the melancholy feel of the song as the guitars clash around them. The emotionally vulnerable lyrics also feed the anxiety of revealing your true feelings to a partner as Carla sings “I’d rather die/A thousand times/Before letting you know/How I feel about you.”

“The Tree” is a standout track on the album with its reverb-heavy guitars and surf rock vibes. The guitar riffs are the major focus as they weave in and out of the steady drumbeat and Carla’s shouted vocals. “It’s A Frog’s World” is a loud track with both Carla and Jazz shouting the lyrics in unison before the guitars slam together towards the end of the song. The ferocious sound is a pleasure to hear as the guitars seem to compete for dominance as they screech and wail over one another.

Overall, Self Worth moves at a brisk pace, but the songs hold your attention. It is exhilarating to hear how much fun the band seems to be having on each song as they literally rock and roll. While each track is different than the other, the band’s energetic post-punk sound remains and is the driving force throughout the album.
