Peterborough, New Hampshire’s Footings are getting ready to follow-up their self-titled 2018 record with a new album. Before that happens though, the band will unveil “Later Days,” a sharp and triumphant single that ruminates about procrastination. These past seven months have made procrastination increasing relevant, as self motivation struggles when we have no idea of what tomorrow brings. For Footings songwriter Eric Gagne, he’s here to offer a reminder that maybe later is now, and things can’t be delayed forever. Backed by an incredible collection of New England musicians - Elisabeth Fuchsia, Candace Clement, Jordan Holtz, and Ben Rogers, the song feels a lot more immediate than it’s subject matter would convey.
Blending together Americana, folk, and sleepy art rock into something that feels as tall as the trees, Gagne continues to grow into the roll of shadowy story teller, drawing comparisons to artists like Bill Callahan and Califone. His voice is deep but gentle, full of contemplation and wisdom. There’s a bit of gloom involved, but the narrative feels strong, built on a chugging progression and a guitar line that weaves between the verses for a hook void of lyrics but equally impactful. “Later Days” is out October 28th via Trailing Twelve.
