Suitor are a new band from Cleveland, OH but the members are no strangers. The duo of Emma Shepard (who has contributed to Post-Trash from time to time) and Chris Corsi have been playing together since 2014 as part of their band, Small Wood House, but they’ve opted to explore a different sound with their latest project. Set to release their debut EP, Communion, on October 9th, the band have shifted away from the SWH’s indie psych sound for something rooted in lo-fi post-punk a la The Raincoats or more recently reminiscent of Sweeping Promises, without actually sounding like either. The band have shared singles “A Picture With A Hole Inside,” “Suitor,” and “Now Now,” and we’ve got the premiere of “To Water,” another glimpse into their upcoming record.

If you’ve yet to hear Suitor, “To Water” is a great an introduction to the duo as any, a song that’s both full of tension and irresistible melodic charm. The song opens with a washed out guitar riff that sounds like Nirvana played underwater but tangled into a hypnotic state that pulls it a bit closer to something like Lithics, before everything is dragged into the basement for a little grit. It’s dingy, in a good way, and snaps into place with the motorik rhythm, the use of repetition giving framework to the lilting vocals, buried just enough to add texture without sitting front and center. It’s a strong first outing and we’re eager to hear the album in full on October 9th.
