Following the demise of Brooklyn’s long running slacker pop extraordinaires Doubting Thomas Cruise Control, vocalist/guitarist Bobby Cardos wasted little time before embarking on a new project. Out came bcc: (who you may remember from our short lived podcast) and now the band are set to release their ambitious debut album, A New Theory of Nothing and A New Theory of Nowhere, due out February 22nd. The album is comprised of one enormous semi-improvisational 40+ minute long song, though leading to its release it has been broken into nine individual parts.
“Once Was Lost,” which serves as part four of the whole piece (starting around the 10 minute mark), opens in sweeping fashion with the quintet’s (Cardos, Kaitlyn Flanagan, Dan Murphy, Brad Passarelli, and Abhay Singh) extended string section lending a hand, offering a floating atmosphere to the otherwise almost twangy guitars. It all resonates together beautifully, arranged with dimly light colors that work together with Cardos’ casual vocal approach. It feels like the starting of something new, a fresh beginning, and a welcome introduction to a project that began fully realized even as the composition is built on a loose framework.
