Toronto psych punks Possum are set to release their full length debut, Space Grade Assembly, in just a few weeks (June 21st via Garment District), a record that is both swirling with garage rock excess and cosmic basement fuzz. It shreds and shreds, brain cells be damned, bringing to mind early albums from Wand or Meatbodies. The band have dipped into the acid and just how many hits later they have emerged is anyone’s guess. Recalling both classic stoner rock and mind expanding psych, they channel it all into a flood of inescapable guitars and shuffling rhythms. Having previously shared “The Hills” and “Worms Hollow,” we’ve got the premiere of their latest single and video, “Party Jam.”
Whether the song’s title is accurate or not simply depends on you like to get down, but if a woozy good time in a room dense with smoke is your kinda party, than this is your soundtrack. Big and fuzzy, “Party Jam” is full of delightful reverb and a determined buzz, jangling in warped waves of layers upon layers of guitars. The song, similar to the video, seems to be about wanting to find something (or someone) to latch onto, someone to believe in, only to come away feeling like “you’re fucking with my head.” The dark and jittery video finds the party only after traveling through what seems to be some sort of extra low-budget wormhole… everyone’s favorite inner-dimensional travel. Don’t overthink it, just let it rock.
