Model Zero are a new band from Memphis with plenty of familiar faces, comprised of members of Ex-Cult, Aquarian Blood, and The Sheiks. Set to released their self-titled debut album on May 31st via Slovenly Records and Black Gladiator, the band play a dark and creepy blend of post-punk, no wave, and garage punk that feels at home in Memphis but could just as easily be made on another planet altogether. After sharing first single “Gift of Lies” to give us all a proper introduction, we’re excited to premiere the band’s latest, “Mr. Soul,” a cover of the fiery Neil Young led Buffalo Springfield classic. The center piece of their album, the cover keeps the bounce and rock ‘n’ roll guitars of the original, but makes it entirely their own through drum machine manipulation and washes of feedback that run over the boogie vibes and razor sharp beat. It sounds both retro and futuristic, an apocalyptic and noisy approach at classic rock, and it truly works.
