Next Friday sees the release of Shady Bug’s sophomore album, but they aren’t celebrating alone. The band will play a duel album release show together with Yuppy, a new band to the St. Louis DIY scene, though the members have been playing around for several years. Set to release their debut EP, Caillou, on March 7th, the band recorded together with Eric Hudson (Foxing) and that’s about all the details we’ve got. if their first single is anything to go by, we’re in for a truly dynamic set of songs that are big on texture and melodic radiance.
“Love Handle,” the lead single and EP opener, is a wistful ride from calm to exuberant, starting with a jangly flourish and some gentle vocals before winding it’s way into a web of tangled guitars and stop/start rhythms. The band complicate the dreamy structure of the intro without losing the melodic hold, bringing back the verse just when things start to expand further outward. Just as the song seems to fade around the two minute mark, the quartet ride a motorik beat into a spacey yet excited state, with a second vocalist and a bouncing rhythm that sits somewhere between pop-punk and shoegaze. Every new section builds upon the last and Yuppy keep you guessing from start to finish.
