Last September, Pittsburgh’s The Zells released their full length debut Failure To Slide via Crafted Sounds, another label doing their part to document the scene in their unique part of the country (and the home to the excellent Bat Zuppel). After a few tour tapes and a teaser single, the band’s debut burned with thirteen slacker punk and power-pop anthems, rooted in accessibility but built on big overdriven fuzz melodies. There’s some pop-punk and shades of ramshackle emo in there, but it’s a fun album that feels as though you should indeed be shouting along with the band in some sweaty basement. The band headed out on a short tour in support of the record and documented the trip with their own camcorder. The results are the “Tracy” video, a joyous montage of five friends having a great time on the road. They skip rocks, dance for the camera, play some rock, paper, scissors, and of course there’s some footage that confirms it, this band rips live with plenty of guitar noise.
