We’ve heard two songs from Sean Henry’s upcoming album, A Jump From The High Dive, already: the childlike and beautiful “Rain Rain” and the high-energy rocker “Surf Song”. Now the new single, “You Fall Away,” reveals yet another page of Henry’s incredibly versatile songbook. The song’s soft touch and nostalgic tones invite the listener in, despite its forlorn, heartbroken subject matter. “You Fall Away” combines two of Henry’s songwriting instincts, the melody-forward songwriting of Bob Pollard/Guided by Voices and the effortless grace of Big Star, into a pitch-perfect rock ballad. Engineered by Brian Antonucci (who shares production credits here with Henry), the guitars and vocals capture the restless youth of mid-90s, crackling with a coiled energy that erupts in a final-minute guitar solo. The track also features bass by Dan George, who also performs in the Connecticut band Skating.
A Jump From The High Dive comes out the day after Halloween on Double Double Whammy. It follows 2018’s underrated Fink, and if these three singles are any indication, Sean Henry is completing his transition from DIY pop rock savant (first as Boy Crush, and then in the short-lived High Pop) to a fully-realized songwriting auteur.
