Virginia's Eternal Summers have been putting out muscular dream-pop for the better part of the decade and each successive album finds them getting better and better. Their songs pop right out the speakers. Guitars squiggle around in pleasing patterns, the rhythms are infectious, consistently grooving with subtle nuance, and Nicole Yun's voice is simultaneously stunning, gentle, and commanding. Their latest album, Every Day It Feels Like I'm Dying... is full of artful detours and hidden textural gems, a record that is undeniably immediate but even more enjoyable the further you dig in.
"Famous Last Words" is one of the stand-outs, a song that embraces the trio's Japanese, French, and Swedish pop influences, taking a breezier approach to the band's usual fuzz with lush arrangements and mesmerizing textures. The video has a sock puppet... need I really say more? In case I do (though I shouldn't), Socky is a new member of Eternal Summers and he has his own idea on how being a band member works... but no spoilers here, you'll just have to watch to find out how everything works out.
Amanda Monroe Finn, the video's director, shared:
"I've known Eternal Summers personally for nearly a decade as fellow musicians and friends, so it was super fun and natural to make this video with them. "Famous Last Words" came together from a concept by the band, inspired by 90s psychedelic imagery and an affinity for zany and weird comedy. We shot it over the course of two or three hours in a gallery in Charlottesville, with styling by the band and myself, and extra help from photographer Tom Daly. The end result has elements of French New Wave, Jim Henson, Gen X slacker comedy and experimental filmmaking.”
