It is currently 94 degrees inside my apartment. It's so hot I can barely think straight, which is fitting we share New Orleans' duo Lawn's new video and title track to their recently released album, Blood On The Tracks. The record is one of our favorites so far this year, an album we said was, "shifting seamlessly and creating a carefree cohesion ... pulling influences from The Clean and Wire as well as The Beatles and The Zombies, it's all a bit off-kilter, but it's undeniably focused on bent pop structures." The title track is that perfect sweet spot between the easy going psych and the washed out post-punk, a song that cruises over a casual melody before the carnival barker vocals hone in and hypnotize.
The video, whose concept just seems to be "let's have fun and smash stuff... little figurines, pies, whatever... is certainly a joy to watch. The band try not to laugh, but it's clear they're having a great time, and what more can you really ask for? If only all press conferences were so enjoyable, watching the news would be a lot more fun. Concept or none, the video's stark colors work brilliantly with the warm tones and the matter-of-factly nonchalant barrage of lyrics and effortlessly cool backing harmonies.
Speaking about the video, the band shared:
"It was directed by our friends Zack and Annie, both incredibly talented filmmakers. The idea stemmed from a desire for immediate fun and remembrance; the song itself is very much rooted in anxiety and mental exhaustion so we just wanted to do something more lighthearted for the video. It's not even a matter of contrast or anything like that. We really just wanted to have a laugh and throwing pies at each other seemed like a nice way to achieve that."
