Throughout John Wesley Coleman III’s long and prolific career he’s made sometimes scuzzy sometimes twangy punk with The Golden Boys and brought his folk tinged garage magic to solo records… loose, stumbling, but wise and thoughtful. The Austin mainstay is getting ready to follow up last year’s Microwave Dreams (released via Super Secret Records) with a new album, a new label, and new backing band that may be familiar. Set to release Cuckoo Bird Sings a Song via Goliad Media on October 26th, the record was recorded by none other than JAILL’s Vincent Kircher, who together with the rest of JAILL served as Coleman’s studio band.
“Kick It Again” is pure dusty Western power-pop, a jangly number that isn’t afraid to howl with its unique Southern roots and country fried accents. It’s as relaxed as the breeze, moving in free space and time, but utterly aware “the world is upside down.” Drifting along with a color arrangement of guitars, keys, and programmed drums, Coleman reminds us “I ain’t crazy, just a little sad maybe,” a feeling that resonates in its simplicity as we’re all feeling a bit of that these days.
